Obituary For Evelyn Ruth Smallwood
Evelyn Ruth Smallwood, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 19, 2023 in Englewood, Ohio. The daughter of Earnest Carl and Nancy Mullins, Evelyn was born on August 29, 1932 in Dwight, Virginia. She married Elbert “Pete” Smallwood on October 15, 1949. Pete and Evelyn moved to Geneva, Ohio in 1955, following the birth of their first two children, Marcus “Bruce” and Susan Jane. Two more children, Daniel Carl and Rosalie
Nancy, were born in Ohio.
Evelyn spent her life devoted to her family, her husband and her church. She was the loving matriarch to an extended family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews.
She spent most of her life in the Geneva area before moving to Englewood a few years ago to be with her daughter Susan. Early in her residence in Geneva, she worked at Yoder Bros. nursery and Isley’s before settling in as a full-time mom in the family home
on Eastwood St. in Geneva.
Besides her dedication to family, she was a faithful servant to her church, the Geneva Assembly of God (now known as New Life Assembly of God), where she served as church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and all-round volunteer. She loved cooking for her family, especially for the holidays. She was an avid reader, particularly of the Bible, and she loved Agatha Christie and other mystery writers.
She will be greatly missed by her family, many of whom were at her bedside when she passed away. Her grandchildren will miss her peanut butter candy, chicken dumplings, grilled cheese, pineapple upside down cake and her sloppy joes. She always made her
grandchildren feel special and loved. And she will be missed by her cat, Oliver, who showed up out of the blue a few days after her husband Pete passed away and who spent the rest of her life with her.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years Pete Smallwood, siblings Otis, Dolly, Virgil, Percy, Rosalee, Erma, and grandson Kevin David Stillwell, Jr.
She is survived by her children Marcus Bruce Smallwood (Sharon), Susan Jane Branek (Donald), Daniel Carl Smallwood (Julie), and Rosalie Nancy Weiner (Richard), her sisters Mildred Davidson and Juanita Stein, as well as 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren with one on the way. The grandkids: Lisa, Brian, Karen, Lori, Jon, David, Kelly, Melissa, Rachel, Elliot, Cassie, Rebecca, Debbie, Kimberly, Emily, Jarod and Jacob. The great grandkids (currently): Nicholas, Sara, Owen, Alex, Claudia, Mallory, Michael, Samantha, Abigail, Madelyn, Autumn, Kellan, Andi, Brooks, Makyla, Hazel, Peyton, Jocelyn, Brittney, Matthew, Priya, Olivine, Penelope, Olive, Daphne, Silas and Fox and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling Hours will be at Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St. in Geneva on Sunday, November 26 from 5-7 PM. The funeral will be held at Monday, November 27 at 10:30 at New Life Assembly of God, 1961 Lafevre Rd., Geneva.
