Obituary For Glenn Earl Warner
Glenn Earl Warner’s life started on November 30th, 1934 in Saybrook, Ohio. He was the eldest of 3 children, born to James and Ada Breley Warner. His siblings were David Warner and Frieda (Showers) Galbraith, also known as Grandma Peanut. Glenn met Mary Lou Jones in 1954 at the Austinburg Skating Rink. Glenn was trying to get her attention, so he purposely tripped her up and she then asked him to skate on the next skate, which was a woman’s choice couples’ skate. On February 12th, 1955, they were married.
Glenn and Mary Lou Warner had four children; Steven in November of 1955, Michael in March of ’58, Catherine in May of ’59, who is married to Douglas Goerke, and Dale in December of ’60. They have four grandchildren, two of which are married; Daniel and his wife Sally Collins Warner, Kayla Warner, Thomas Goerke and James Goerke and his wife Bianca DiMaio. Earlier this year they had their first Great-Grandchild, Teddy Warner (son of Daniel and Sally).
He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Lois Chemerys, and his nephews, Bob (Kim) Showers and Mark (Krystal) Galbraith and their families. Glenn and Mary Lou were also the God-parents for Tammy and Bill Sheppard.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Frieda Galbraith in 1996, and Dave Warner in 2003., his wife of 64 years in 2019 and his son Dale in 2020.
Glenn worked various jobs in order to support his family after he was laid off from Thompson Electric. The odd jobs included; painting, putting up TV antennas, minor car repairs, helping his parents at the former Warner’s Landing at Geneva on the Lake. In 1959, Glenn got a job at C.E.I., now known as First Energy. Thanks to blue print reading in Mr. Ekern’s shop class, he became a Senior Construction Mechanic. His various duties at the C.E.I, included building substations, remodeling offices, various maintenance jobs, building manholes and more. He retired from C.E.I. in 1993 at the age of 59, after 35 years of service. While working at the C.E.I., he also worked evenings and weekends repairing cars at Foust Auto Supply.
After retiring, he spent a lot of time showing off his 1952 Henry J, which was fully restored with the help of his brother Dave and his nephew Bob, (His sister Frieda’s son). In fact, Glenn drove a tractor-trailer for 3 years just to help pay for his Henry J’s restoration. Later Glenn worked as a School Bus Driver for 10 years in Ashtabula.
Scouting was a huge part of Glenn’s life as well. He spent over 42 years involved in Scouts. He started Scouting in 1964, as the Scoutmaster of Troop 21. In 1976, he joined the District Committee. In 1978, he became the District Outdoors Activity Chairman. And in ’89, he joined the Camp Stigwandish Property Committee. In 1998, Glenn became a Webelos Leader for Pack 13, as well as their Popcorn Chairman. In 2002, he restarted Troop 13 at Harris Memorial Church and was the Scoutmaster for this Troop. Glenn also spent many weeks during the summer being part of the Camp Staff at Camp Stigwandish.
Besides taking his 1952 Henry J to Car Shows, as well as Scouting, Glenn loved to fish, go camping and working with young people, as well as spend time with his close friends. He was a member of the Windjammers CB Radio Club for over 15 years, as well as the Sociable CBers. He was involved with the Rod and Reel Association for over 7 years. He worked on the class Reunion in ’90, ’94, ’99, 2003 and 2013. And he loved to build and race remote control boats, both in the water and in the snow.
Glenn has had many special friends in his life; he enjoyed time with his CEI buddies, as well as gatherings with his Classmates. But he always considered Butch and Linda Burgett, as well as Dave and Beth Sheppard his closest friends. Glenn was an extrovert and loved being around people and doing things. Those of us who knew him, know that we are going to miss this very special man who, before he got sick, loved life.
